Utah does not have state laws regarding the payment of overtime wages. Instead, employees in Utah who are eligible for overtime pay under the Fair Labor Standards Act must receive time-and-a-half compensation for hours worked over 40 in a single workweek. For more information on wage and hour law in Utah, visit the website of the UT Labor Commission.
The minimum wage in Utah is $7.25 per hour; the Utah minimum wage is the same as the federal rate. Workers under the age of 18 must be paid at the current Utah minimum wage, but may be paid $4.25 during the initial 90 days of employment. The minimum wage in Utah for tipped employees is $2.13. However, tipped workers must receive at least the Utah minimum wage when combining tips and direct wages.
When an employee quits or is fired, wages become payable immediately. These workers should receive their final paychecks within 24 hours of separation. If the worker does not have a written contract for a certain time period and resigns, he or she should be paid by the next regularly scheduled payday. These regulations may not apply to the wages of sales agents who receive commissions.
